Each month we intend to put a number of popular questions to our vets relating to general pet health and care. Whilst in no way intended to replace a professional diagnosis, we hope that the information and advice provided on these pages are useful. There is also a number of excellent fact sheets created by the Blue Cross pet charity, to the right of this page.

Dog Questions:

What is a microchip and should I get one for my dog?

A microchip, hardly bigger than a grain of rice, is designed to sit under the dog's skin and carries a unique number which allows permanent  identification of your pet. They help us rapidly find an owner for lost or injured animals as well as being a necessity for those dogs wishing to travel abroad under the Pet Travel Scheme. Scanners to read the chips are held by Veterinary Practices, Dog Wardens, Local Animal Charities, Port Authorities and some Police Stations.  We feel that microchips are essesntial if we are to practice responsible pet ownership.
